How to Make Dutch Oven BBQ Beef Sandwiches

(Step-by-Step Instructions)

Heat the Dutch Oven

Add a drizzle of oil to your Dutch oven and warm it over medium-high heat while you season your roast.

Season the Roast

Generously season your chuck roast on all sides with your favorite seasonings.

Forgot to thaw your roast?
No worries! You can absolutely season a frozen roast. The seasoning may not stick quite as well at first, but it'll still develop wonderful flavor as it cooks.

Sear the Roast

Place the roast into the hot Dutch oven and sear as many sides as you can.

Don't worry if your roast is too large to brown every side perfectly. A quick sear adds great flavor, but this recipe is very forgiving.

Roast Low & Slow

Cover the Dutch oven with its lid and place it into the oven.

  • Frozen roast: Bake at 275°F for about 4 hours.
  • Thawed roast: Bake at 375°F for about 2 hours.

Cooking times will vary depending on the size of your roast. It's ready when it's fork tender and easily pulls apart.

Remove Fat & Bones

Once the roast is fully cooked, remove any large pieces of fat or bones before shredding.

My Favorite Kitchen Hack

Instead of shredding with two forks, use an electric hand mixer right in the Dutch oven.

Simply turn the mixer on low and move it through the roast for less than a minute. It creates perfectly shredded beef with almost no effort, and once you try it, you'll probably never go back!

Build Your Sandwiches

Pile the warm shredded beef onto soft hamburger buns and top with your favorite barbecue sauce.

Serve immediately while everything is warm and tender.

How to Use & Store Shredded Beef Roast

These BBQ beef sandwiches pair perfectly with all your favorite classic sides. Serve them with potato chips, creamy coleslaw, French fries, tater tots, pasta salad, fresh fruit, or a handful of crunchy pickles for an easy, satisfying meal.

Store leftover shredded beef in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

For longer storage, freeze portions in freezer-safe bags or containers for up to 3 months. I like to include a little of the cooking juices with the meat to help keep it nice and moist when reheating.

Reheat gently on the stovetop, in the microwave, or in a slow cooker until warmed through.

a few helpful tips

  • Don't worry if your roast isn't completely thawed—this recipe works great either way.
  • Cook until the beef easily pulls apart with a fork. Every roast is a little different.
  • Use your family's favorite barbecue sauce to make this recipe your own.
  • Make extra! The leftovers are just as delicious as the first meal.
